 Older Drivers

Older people are a large and increasing proportion of the Auckland population. Mobility is vital for people to maintain a full and independent life, therefore, transport policy and environment, and vehicle design needs to reflect, and provide for, their needs.

Older drivers need to stay alert to their changing general health and fitness factors, such as eye sight, hearing, reaction time, and medical conditions, so that they can continue to drive safely. Since these changes are often gradual, they may not be apparent to the individual concerned or to members of their immediate family or friends.

While older drivers may perceive their driving ability and skills has not deteriorated, most do tend to adjust their driving patterns to avoid rush hour traffic, night driving and poor weather conditions.

Driver License Renewal

Drivers must renew their driver license at age 75, 80 and every two years after that. When renewing a license from age 75, health and vision must be regularly checked, both for individual safety and the safety of other road users.
