Facts About Young Drivers

The Bad News - Young Drivers have a High Crash Rate

School aged drivers are over-represented in minor, serious and fatal crashes in the Auckland region per kilometres travelled.

68% of 15 to 24 year old drivers responsible for causing a crash are male.

Young drivers crash mainly because they are inexperienced and have less developed visual scanning and hazard detection skills.

Young drivers are more likely to be over-confident and influenced by peer pressure around driving expectations.

The Good News - Young Drivers can Reduce their Crash Risk with Practice

Using the free 'Practice' guide at www.practice.co.nz, 120 hours of supervised driving can reduce crash risk by up to 30%. Develop visual scanning and hazard detection skills using the free CD Drives software that comes with the 'Practice' kit.

Keep to license conditions i.e. no passengers, speeding or alcohol.

Practice choices - speaking up, taking responsibility and using safer and more sustainable forms of transport including bus, train, walking and cycling.
