Pedestrian safety is a major concern for the Auckland region, especially in highly urban areas within Auckland City and Manukau City, and especially amongst children.
Achieving greater pedestrian safety is a complex task. To date RoadSafe Auckland has placed emphasis on four areas:
- Implementing Walking School Buses, School Travel Plans and Safer Routes within at-risk communities (contact your local Road Safety Coordinator for more information);
- General education to school children (Police and Land Transport RoadSense education programmes);
- Pedestrian safety awareness raising to motorists and pedestrians (e.g. NZ Transport Agency ads, Auckland City Council promotions, Rail safety campaigns, distribution of brochures to older adults, to name a few);
- Engineering improvements (e.g. pedestrian facility upgrades in most council areas, Pedestrian Power Trial focusing on identifying and solving engineering issues in the Central Business District).
RoadSafe Auckland is keen to see at-risk schools be a focus of more intensive road safety activity through a combination of education, engineering and enforcement measures. A project is currently under development to work proactively with schools in the Auckland region.
More road safety information for schools is available on the School Safety page.
